| Eel fishing and Eel conservation on Lough Neagh - Paul Downing Feb
07 |
Lough Neagh has a large quantity of eels that are farmed for commercial purposes and
exported throughout the world. However the eel stocks on the Lough are on the decline
and it is becoming increasingly difficult to make a viable living from fishing on the
lough.
Eels have between declining rapidly for the past 27 years. This trend extends
throughout Europe and has a number of causes including changes in ocean climate,
habitat loss, predation, hydroelectric turbine mortality, over-exploitation, pollution
and parasites on the fishing area.
This decline is of considerable concern to fishing authorities and the European
Commission has drafted a Regulation to introduce Eel Conservation Measures. The main
proposed measures under debate by member states are:-
" It will be prohibited to fish for, land or retain eels from the first to the
fifteenth day of each month.
